The Exposure Triangle

Exposure is how bright or dark an image is, controlled by three interdependent camera settings. Changing any one requires compensating with another to keep the same overall exposure — which is why they're taught as a triangle rather than a checklist.

Aperture ISO Shutter Speed

Aperture (f-stop)

The size of the lens opening. A wide aperture (low f-number, e.g. f/1.4) lets in more light and produces a shallow depth of field; a narrow aperture (high f-number, e.g. f/16) lets in less light but keeps more of the image in focus.

Shutter Speed / Angle

How long the sensor is exposed to light for each frame. Faster shutter speeds freeze motion crisply; slower speeds let in more light but introduce motion blur. Standard 24fps cinema traditionally uses a "180° shutter" (roughly 1/48s) for naturalistic motion blur.

ISO / Sensor Sensitivity

How sensitive the sensor is to available light. Higher ISO brightens the image in low light but introduces visible grain/noise; lower ISO gives a cleaner image but needs more light.

Why it matters: each control carries a creative side-effect beyond brightness — aperture affects depth of field, shutter speed affects motion blur, ISO affects grain. A cinematographer chooses the combination that achieves the right exposure and the right look simultaneously, not brightness alone.

Deeper DiveStops, Metering, and Dynamic Range

Each of the three exposure controls is measured in stops — a doubling or halving of the amount of light reaching the sensor. Moving aperture from f/2.8 to f/4 is "one stop down"; halving shutter speed or halving ISO is also "one stop." Because all three share this common unit, a cinematographer can trade one for another freely: closing the aperture by one stop and doubling the ISO cancels out, leaving overall exposure unchanged while shifting depth of field and grain.

Professional sets typically expose using a handheld light meter rather than trusting a camera's built-in automatic metering. An incident meter measures the light actually falling on the subject (pointed at the camera from the subject's position); a reflective meter measures light bouncing off the subject back toward the camera — including a camera's built-in meter. Incident metering is generally preferred on professional sets because it isn't fooled by unusually bright or dark subjects the way reflective metering can be.

Dynamic range is the span between the darkest shadow detail and brightest highlight detail a sensor can capture without losing information ("clipping"). Modern digital cinema cameras often shoot in a flat, desaturated Log profile (or RAW) specifically to preserve maximum dynamic range for flexibility later in the color grading process — see Color.

On brightly lit exteriors, cinematographers frequently add neutral density (ND) filters — essentially "sunglasses for the lens" — to cut incoming light without changing color, allowing a wide aperture (for shallow depth of field) even in bright daylight that would otherwise force the aperture closed.
